Communications Specialist

Candidates for this and every DoD SkillBridge internship opportunity with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are able to intern for 180, 120, and 90 days and MUST be at least 11 MONTHS away from (outside of) separation. Why 11 months? We are able to host SkillBridge interns for their final 180, 120, and/or 90 days on active-duty depending on the individual service-member’s situation. We use the time prior to their finite internship dates to complete our required HR actions to include getting them in front of hiring managers, having interviews conducted, selection decisions being made, “Qualifications Reviews” successfully completed on their resumes clearly demonstrating that they have the required experience, etc. for the positions for which they are being considered, along with a 3 to 5 month (on average) full CBP Background Investigation (BI) that MUST be completed prior to internship start dates.MAJOR DUTIESThis position is located within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Training and Development (OTD), and serves in a developmental capacity under the leadership and guidance of a higher graded specialist. The intern is responsible for executing the U.S. Border Patrol Academy social media strategy and for drafting, monitoring, and responding to social media postings. The intern works under close supervision, and in a developmental capacity performing work assignments and completing training, both of which are aimed in preparing the intern to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the following duties:• The intern implements U.S. Border Patrol Social Media Strategy, developing brand awareness, generating inbound traffic, and encouraging product adoption. • Implements the social media strategy, coordinating with stakeholders to ensure its effectiveness and encouraging adoption of relevant social media techniques into the corporate culture and into all U.S. Border Patrol Academy products and services. • Manages social media campaigns and day-to-day activities. Duties include online advocacy, writing editorials, community-outreach efforts, promotions, etc. • Maintains a presence in social networking sites including Twitter, and other similar community sites, posting on relevant blogs, and seeding content into social applications as needed. • Under guidance from the supervisor will become an advocate of the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in social media spaces, answering questions where appropriate. • Monitors effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of social media programs, and analyze, review, and report on effectiveness of campaigns to maximize results. • Plans, researches, and writes communication products such as talking points, brochures, and web content. • Participates in communication projects and performs analysis on the effectiveness of the communication projects. • Collaborates and communicates with designers and developers to assist in creating innovative online communication. • Regularly communicates insights gained from the monitoring of social media to assist in evolving strategies in a timely fashion.

A Training Technician facilitates CBP basic, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC)-sponsored training. Works with the Hiring Center and each Border Patrol Sector to identify those trainees who meet class criteria and confirms personnel scheduled for basic training. Maintains liaison with the FLETC Scheduling Coordinator, and other organizational personnel as required for scheduling students. Assists with schedules and securing and coordinating the use of training sites, facilities, and materials. Performs requisite class coordination responsibilities associated with training. Must be familiar with assigned courses, purpose, scope, prerequisites, administrative requirements, and all appropriate coordination points of contact to include program offices. The responsibilities include but are not limited to:• Sending email notifications with pertinent training specifics and travel information to students. • Coordinating classroom set up with Logistics.• Assisting with the welcome orientation for each class. • Managing student bio sheets to generate rosters and other reports.• Coordinating with Session supervisors and instructors and provides guidance to students, as required, for duration of training. • Assists students with the completion of required travel documents within the agency's automated travel system. Prior to student travel, reviews all travel authorizations to ensure appropriate funding codes are used, travel dates and other information are correct, and compliance with Academy policies and procedures, as well as Federal Travel Regulations. After review, forwards to appropriate official for approval. Same review required for processing travel vouchers for reimbursement of expenses.• Assists with class management using the agency's learning management system and maintains electronic and hardcopy files for each class, to include but not limited to rosters, schedules, departure information, and grade reports. • Assures all scores and other records are received timely for entry. Collects all training and reference material from instructors and students at the end of the training, sorts and organizes the material, and conducts an inventory. • Assists instructors with grade calculation and prepares transcripts for each student. • Assists with support requirements for closing ceremonies and graduations ceremonies by coordinating with the lead instructors. • Prepares award letters, picks up plaques and other awards, generates graduation notes and programs for ceremonies, secures badges/credentials for issuance, and ensures all other administrative requirements for graduations are completed prior to a set time and date.• Prepares area for graduation ceremonies, practices with students prior to graduation, and ensures audio-visual equipment is working properly before ceremony begins. Assists with lighting for the auditorium and other behind-the-scenes operations.
