Position: Certified Surgical TechnologistJob Description:The Surgical Technologist provides safe and efficient care to the surgical patient under thesupervision of the registered nurse (RN) and in collaboration with the surgeon. The SurgicalTechnologist functions primarily in the scrub role and is responsible for selecting, preparing, andmaintaining instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. The Surgical Technologist possessesknowledge in the application of sterile and aseptic technique and is able to adapt tounpredictable situations within the perioperative setting. The Surgical Technologist utilizesknowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, surgical instrumentation and technology asmember of the surgical team.Minimum Education and/or Experience Required:Graduation from an accredited or military surgical technology program. Certification in SurgicalTechnology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)required within one year of hire date and maintained thereafter. Maintains Basic Life Support(BLS) competency.Surgical Technologists hired at the following locations prior to the identified dates, are notrequired to have a Surgical Technology certification through NBSTSA:· Mayo Clinic Health System in Southwest Minnesota hires prior to 10/15/2014.· Mayo Clinic Health System in Wisconsin hires prior to 11/20/2024.· Mayo Clinic in Florida and Arizona hires prior to 11/20/2024· Enterprise Staffing Pool hires prior to 11/20/2024Internal transfers to Rochester or Southeast Minnesota are required to have the SurgicalTechnology certification through NBSTSA.Additional Experience and/or Qualifications:Licensure/Certification Required:Current BLS and certification through NBSTSA within one year of hire date.Physical Requirements:• Be able to lift 25 pounds and carry the weight 40 feet• Be able to stand for long periods of time• Exhibit manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordinationLength of Internship: 16 WeeksClear evidence that all training will be completed in the authorized period for the organization’sSkillBridge program if approved.Timeline-16 weeksTitle-Mayo Clinic Minnesota SkillBridgeCertified Surgical TechnologistTraining Program 2025• Review orientation expectations.• Collaborate with your Nursing Leadership Team to complete a learning needs assessment.• Discuss with Nursing Leadership Team any requests for accommodations in alignmentwith the Reasonable Accommodations Procedure.• Identify orientation goals. Preceptor provides minimal assistance and functions as a resource.Specific Training Objectives-• Actively participates in briefing and debriefing.• Demonstrate proper handling and / or transportation of equipment according toinstructions and seek clarification when needed.• Demonstrate safe medication management based on role responsibilities.• Ensure utilization of the electrosurgical machine according to manufacturer’s guidelinesand recommended practices.• Evaluate effectiveness of equipment and supplies prior to use.• Identify and practice safety precautions for patients and employees for radiation andlaser use.• Identify appropriate bed, positioning, equipment, and draping type for procedure.Mayo Clinic Minnesota SkillBridgeCertified Surgical TechnologistTraining Program 2025• Implement protective measures to prevent skin or tissue injury by verifying thetemperature of solutions instruments and equipment prior to use.• Properly perform fire risk assessments as written in the institutional policy and discussactions to reduce fire risk.• Verify head-to-toe patient positioning to eliminate potential pressure injury risks and planfor positioning changes.• Demonstrate proper draping and table set up, including obtaining correct equipment.• Identify appropriate prep solutions, follow manufacturer's instructions for use and followspolicy and established procedures.• Identify proper opening of sterile supplies, equipment and medications to the sterile field.• Identify proper sterile techniques. Assist in gowning and gloving sterile personnelincluding monitoring and correcting breaks in sterile technique.• Identify, check, and confirm types of sterilization monitoring methods (integrators, panfilters, tape).• Perform surgical counts as written in the policy.Type of Instructional Model-• Classroom instruction• Online• Hands of demonstrationInstructor Qualification (mentor)-An experienced, certified surgical technologist within the section where the internship will becompleted.Assessments-The intern will meet regularly with their qualified mentor and Nursing Education Specialist todiscuss achievements, review objectives, and highlight opportunities for growth.Training Outcome-• After completing the 16-week experience, the candidate will demonstrate basicknowledge of the procedure of scrubbing surgical cases in a minimum of one serviceline
