Entry-level Health & Safety Consultant (H&SC)

The entry-level Health & Safety Consultant (H&SC) will be learning how to support our clients’ workplace safety initiatives across various industries and types of workplaces. This is a Trainee position requiring the employee to learn and understand government regulations and standards and how to apply that knowledge at clients’ worksites to assess risks. The H&SC will learn how to observe workplace activities and review processes to generate guidance documents and make recommendations for improving and promoting a safe work environment. The H&SC will need to interact with people from many different job functions to inform and instruct about unsafe conditions and activities. It's an ideal role for individuals who can quickly assess situations to make decisions, are passionate about safeguarding people and eager to begin a rewarding career in the occupational health and safety field. The H&SC will begin to develop their expertise in public and occupational health and safety by learning the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards for General Industry and Construction as well as any state and local regulations that may apply to the clients’ workplace. As part of their skills development, the H&SC will acquire the knowledge and understanding of other regulations from adjacent agencies, including but not limited to the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Dept. of Transportation (USDOT), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). These agencies also have regulations designed to protect human health and life.Novisal’s services involve working on construction sites, hazardous waste clean-up sites, in manufacturing settings and healthcare facilities—anywhere where hazards exist in the workplace. The H&SC will learn about the different types of hazards—chemical, physical and biological—and the impacts they have on human health. They will gain knowledge regarding the various types of clients served by Novisal and the specific hazards associated with different industries and worksites. The H&SC will develop skills to conduct visual inspections and audits of worksites and understand the role of the Health & Safety Consultant to observe workplace activities, advise when unsafe acts occur—stopping them as required—and recommending corrective actions. They will also learn how to document and report incidents and accidents that resulted in injury, illness, or even death. The H&SC will also develop the skills to perform a variety of technical tasks such as conducting assessments using specific instrumentation, sampling for hazards and environmental stressors, working with EHS laboratories to properly collect and submit samples, and how to read and interpret the data collected. Such skills will be used to determine if hazards exist and when assessing the level of “exposure” the workers or public may have to a specific known hazard. The H&SC will begin to develop the skills required to conduct regulatory-specific training to inform workers of Safety Requirements, how to work safely and how to protect themselves from the workplace-specific hazards.
