13-week training plan is to provide active-duty sailors participating in the SkillBridge program the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to efficiently and effectively perform the duties of a WG-08 or WG-10 Outside Machinist at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The training plan includes a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on, and on-the-job training to ensure that participants obtain the required skillset. This program is executed on a 40 Hour work week from the hours of 0720-1600 (40 min lunch). Satisfactory completion of the program may result in a full-time job offer as a WG-08 Marine Machinery Repairer or, with prior experience demonstrated through exceptional performance, Marine Machinery Mechanic WG-10.

Job Title: Marine Machinery Repairer WG-08Job Description: As a Marine Machinery Repairer, the incumbent performs job operations/tasks on conventional and nuclear ships and submarines. Incumbent can be assigned to any and must be able to work in all the work centers of Shop 38, i.e. Steam Engineering, Ordnance, Optical Automatic Combustion Controls, Diesel, Submarine Non-Nuclear and Nuclear. Marine Machinery Repairers receive their work assignments from their immediate supervisor, either orally or in writing. They work from simple plans and layouts. The Supervisor reviews work for adherence to specifications and accepted trade practices. Routine work assignments require the incumbent to determine the use of proper methods, techniques, procedures, and tools. New or unusual task assignments require the incumbent to be given detailed instructions and close guidance and supervision. Marine Machinery Repairers are normally responsible for only portions of major work systems. They are responsible for government owned tools or equipment on loan to them to perform certain aspects of the job and for safe job operations to prevent damage to equipment or injury to other personnel.Job Title: Marine Machinery Mechanic WG-10Job Description: Marine Machinery Mechanics work alone or as part of a team under general supervision of the immediate supervisor, who make assignments orally or in writing. They troubleshoot equipment to determine the area of difficulty, what parts or materials are required; and the methods, techniques, and procedures to use in completing repairs. They plan and layout their work using blueprints, sketches, work orders, and other specifications. The supervisor reviews work for adherence to specifications and accepted trade practices. Has responsibility for independently diagnosing, planning, and completing projects or work orders involving major systems in their entirety. A Marine Machinery Mechanic may give technical guidance to a Marine Machinery Repairer/Apprentice working under their direction. They are responsible for government owned tools or equipment on loan to them to perform certain aspects of the job and for safe job operations to prevent damage to equipment or injury to other personnel.
