The United Association Veterans in Piping (UA VIP) Sprinkler Fitter Program is a Department of Defense SkillBridge training opportunity designed to prepare transitioning active-duty service members for careers in the fire sprinkler and fire protection industry. Participants receive intensive, hands-on training focused on the technical skills, safety practices, tools, equipment, and industry standards used in the sprinkler fitting trade.The program combines classroom instruction with practical, hands-on training to help participants develop job-ready sprinkler fitting skills and prepare for a successful transition into civilian employment. Upon successful completion, participants may have the opportunity to pursue placement with a United Association local union and continue their career development through a registered apprenticeship in the sprinkler fitting and fire protection industry.
Job description:
A Sprinkler Fitter Apprentice assists with the installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of fire sprinkler and suppression systems while developing the skills required to become a qualified sprinkler fitter. Under the supervision of experienced journeypersons, apprentices measure, cut, thread, groove, and assemble steel, copper, and CPVC piping; install sprinkler heads, valves, fittings, hangers, and bracing; and assist with system testing and troubleshooting. Apprentices learn to read drawings and specifications, safely operate hand and power tools, aerial lifts, and material-handling equipment, and follow proper rigging and crane signaling practices. The position requires adherence to jobsite safety procedures, applicable codes and standards, manufacturer requirements, and established quality-workmanship practices.
The VIP program combines classroom instruction with practical, hands-on training to help participants develop job-ready sprinkler fitting skills and prepare for a successful transition into civilian employment. The program is 100% free to participants and does not require the use of GI Bill benefits. During the program, students have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications and 16 college credits from Washtenaw Community College, providing valuable credentials that support their continued education and career development.Upon successful completion, participants earn direct entry into a United Association (UA) registered apprenticeship program and guaranteed employment with a UA signatory contractor in an agreed-upon location nationwide.
Eligibility factors:
Must be a transitioning active-duty Service member with the ability to lift 50lbs or more and be able to stand for long periods of time.
