This position is within the Technical Assurance Group at Clayco and is designed for active-duty service members participating in the Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge Program who are interested in pursuing a career in commissioning, building systems, and construction quality. The Technical Assurance Group is a specialized team focused on verifying the design, installation, and performance of architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building control systems throughout all phases of construction—from early design through post-construction seasonal testing. As a Commissioning Engineer SkillBridge Intern, you will work alongside experienced Commissioning Managers and Engineers, gaining hands-on experience supporting commissioning activities, learning industry best practices, and developing an understanding of building systems, construction processes, and project execution through direct mentorship and field experience.
Job description:
Work closely with Commissioning Managers, project teams, and field personnel to support commissioning activities throughout all phases of construction. Assist with reviewing commissioning plans, testing schedules, and project documentation while coordinating with Operations and Project Management teams to support project schedules, budgets, training, and issue resolution. Participate in pre-commissioning and start-up verifications to help confirm building systems are ready for commissioning activities, and assist with documenting commissioning issues and communicating updates to the appropriate project stakeholders. Support project-specific functional performance testing by observing, documenting, and verifying system performance, while helping identify and document deficiencies in equipment installation or system operation. Assist with preparing building systems for transition to the client following final inspections and completion of commissioning activities. Develop an understanding of building systems, commissioning processes, construction operations, project coordination, and technical assurance through direct mentorship from Clayco Commissioning Managers and Technical Assurance leadership.
The internship opportunities are project-based and may be located anywhere within the United States. While each SkillBridge internship will be completed at a single project location, candidates should be willing to travel and/or relocate if offered full-time employment upon successful completion of the internship. SkillBridge internships may be offered for a period of up to 180 days, in accordance with DoD SkillBridge Program guidelines.Candidates who successfully complete the SkillBridge internship and are offered full-time employment as a Commissioning Engineer may be eligible for a starting annual salary typically ranging from $60,000 to $70,000. Actual compensation will vary based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other business-related factors.

Active-duty military members approved to participate in the DoD SkillBridge Program are encouraged to apply. A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Construction Management, a related field, or equivalent military experience is preferred, along with previous leadership experience in the military, construction industry, or other relevant environments. Candidates should have a strong interest in pursuing a career in building commissioning, technical assurance, or construction engineering. The ideal candidate will be able to work effectively with project teams, management, owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders while balancing and prioritizing multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, a strong commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement, and above-average proficiency with technology and related resources are essential. Candidates should also demonstrate a strong work ethic and be willing to travel and/or relocate if a full-time offer is extended upon successful completion of the SkillBridge internship. Physical requirements include the ability to walk unlevel terrain and active job sites several times per day, climb permanent and temporary stairs, ladders, and scaffolding, access elevated work areas, and work in areas with elevated noise levels and varying weather conditions while using required personal protective equipment (PPE). Successful candidates will be motivated, hardworking, team-oriented, and eager to learn.
