MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESMakes independent judgments and determines the type and extent of repairs needed. Completes repairs with little or no check during their progress or upon completion. Completes repairs and adjustments in accordance with manufacturers' specification and service bulletins and ensures that vehicle systems (e.g., lighting systems, steering mechanisms, mechanical and hydraulic braking systems, and exhaust and related emission control systems) function inaccordance with safety regulations set by various regulatory agencies. Through work orders, manufacturers' specifications, and accepted trade practices, the incumbent troubleshoots, repairs, rebuilds, adjusts, and performs operational checks on a wide variety of major components and systems such as engines, transmissions, differentials and transaxles, electronic fuel injection systems, emission control systems, and related electrical, electronic, hydraulic, fuel, and other assemblies.Troubleshoots using visual inspections and auditory tests. Uses a wide variety of test equipment such as computerized engine analyzers, compression testers, test benches, multimeters, and special feeler and dial gauges in tracing hard-locate defects and problems. Aligns, meshes, and connects repaired units to related mechanisms (e.g., the engine and related clutch mechanism). Hooks up fuel, oil, hydraulic, and electrical systems to repaired units and adjusts to assure proper operation of units. Specializes in troubleshooting and repairing of a wide variety of major systems (as described above) and in the tearing down, overhauling, and rebuilding of one or a limited variety of vehicles such as automobiles, trucks, buses, and tractors. Performs other duties as assigned.
