Why 11 months? We are able to host SkillBridge interns for their final 180, 120, and/or 90 days on active-duty depending on the individual service-member’s situation. We use the time prior to their finite internship dates to complete our required HR actions to include getting them in front of hiring managers, having interviews conducted, selection decisions being made, “Qualifications Reviews” successfully completed on their resumes clearly demonstrating that they have the required experience, etc. for the positions for which they are being considered, along with a 3 to 5 month (on average) full CBP Background Investigation (BI) that MUST be completed prior to internship start dates.MAJOR DUTIESThe CBP Technician (GS-5/7) position is an administrative one assisting CBP Officers in myriad functions at over 300 ports of entry (https://www.cbp.gov/contact/ports) to include: Prepares complex broker/importer cases for decision by specialists; and reviewing declarations and cargo manifests for completeness and compliance with applicable regulations. Examines cargo and merchandise; applying appropriate tariff number, value, and rate of duty and tax to merchandise; comparing passenger baggage to declarations. Coordinates and process of data (permits, entries, declarations) into various automated systems. Assists and provides support to CBP Officers and Agricultural Specialists on inspection, intelligence, analysis and examination of passengers, baggage conveyances and cargo.

Assists in examining cargo and merchandise, ensuring it matches quantity and quality on declaration or invoice, is properly described, notes condition, reports discrepancies, etc. Works with the CBPAS to prevent deliberate or accidental introduction of harmful pests and diseases. Assists in the oversight and monitoring of industry personnel via compliance checks, which include the cleaning and disinfection of contaminated articles, and transfer of cargo following established procedures. Supports the CBPAS by safeguarding and examining quarantine material interceptions and processing and submitting pests and diseases to USDA for identification. Works independently, with a specialist or officer, or as a member of a project team on the full range of cases. Performs a variety of clerical services in support of port and Center operations. Timekeeper; property management; vehicle management; travel; budget and procurement; etc.
