Summary description:
The incumbent will serve as part of a professional backcountry trail crew and will spend 8 days at a time living and working in remote backcountry settings. The North Zone Trails Program covers 3 ranger districts and 926 miles of trail. Ability to hike over mountainous and steep terrain in inclement weather for extended periods of time a must. Candidates will work in small crews in remote and isolated settings spending the summer months camping in wilderness areas for eight days at a time. Availability from May-October required. No internships are available outside of these dates.
Job description:
Individuals will serve as a professional trail crew member on the Nations First National Forest: The Shoshone. Crew members will use primitive tools to accomplish many miles of trail maintenance throughout the season. Regular use of hand tools to install water bars, check-steps, retaining walls, clear trail corridor of trees and downed debris and to widen trail tread. Applicant must be able to hike (12 miles) in rugged and mountainous terrain while carrying a heavy pack daily. Repetitive bending/stooping with heavy packs. Expected to work 10 hours of manual labor everyday in isolated backcountry settings where Grizzly bear are prolific.
