Summary description:
Law enforcement dispatchers answer calls for emergency services in a calm manner. The dispatcher must determine quickly the urgency of the request and dispatch officers and other first responders to the scene. Taylor county dispatches for the Sheriff’s Office, Tye Police Department, Merkel Police Department, 15 volunteer fire departments, two Emergency Medical Service companies, and various other state and local agencies as needed. Close contact with dispatchers allows officers to request additional assistance and other emergency personnel. Dispatchers are trained to obtain vital facts from caller and relay that information to responding personnel quickly and professionally.
Job description:
1. Receives and dispatches incoming telephone and radio calls2. Dispatches officers for response to routine and 911 calls for service, using Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and other division equipment as required3. Receives incoming 911 calls for service, determining nature of the call, first responder agency, and transferring calls as required by the nature of the call4. Receives and send teletype messages on TLETS system for Taylor County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies operating in Taylor County5. Queries TLETS database for information on wanted persons, stolen items, missing persons (including runaway juveniles) and protective orders6. Enters data into TLETS database for wanted persons, criminal histories, stolen items, missing persons (including runaway juveniles) and protective orders for Law Enforcement agencies operating in Taylor County as requested7. Responds to requests for warrant confirmations on TLETS system and telephone, 10 minute response time required8. Responds to radio and telephone requests from other counties, states, federal and international law enforcement criminal justice agencies9. Maintains and records required information in division logs including, wrecker, abandoned vehicle, routine patrol, and livestock owner information10. Communicates, coordinates and dispatches in emergency and non-emergency situations for rural fire and EMS departments11. Coordinates EMS pre-arrival assistance, communicating lifesaving instructions to callers in medical emergencies12. Performs other tasks within professional competency13. Responds to questions from citizens by telephone and in person from the lobby14. Processes warrant paperwork15. Monitors security cameras for the Courthouse16. Exercises sound judgment and ingenuity to provide emergency assistance in incidents posing a threat to the safety of officers and the general publicNon-Essential Job Functions:1. Ability to use good English grammar; oral and writtenWorking Conditions: The majority of the work is inside; general office environment, with exposure to inmate trustees performing custodial work in the office.Occasionally lifts materials and equipment greater that 15 pounds.Shift work is required to maintain 24/7 operation of communications division.Physical Demands: work involves writing, standing, walking, talking, listening, lifting, and reaching with hands and arms. Dispatchers operate a variety of communications equipment in the performance of their duties requiring manual dexterity, visual, auditory, and verbal acuity. The essential functions of this position require extended periods at a desktop environment operating division equipment, answering calls for service.Minimum Education: High School Diploma or EquivalentMinimum/Experience: One year experience with computers, data entry and knowledge of the criminal justice system.Must be able to pass a CritiCall test, reading comprehension test, polygraph test, an extensive back ground check, a drug test and a physicalMinimum Training: 6 weeks minimum in-house training including 16-hour Full Access NCIC/TCIC training; 911 system training, CAD training, CPR, within one year must attend 24-hour NLETS/TLETS training, and TCIC/NCIC certification – bi annual.
