Why 11 months? We are able to host SkillBridge interns for their final 180, 120, and/or 90 days on active-duty depending on the individual service-member’s situation. INTRODUCTION: This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), U.S. Border Patrol (USBP), and serves as a General Engineer/Deployment Engineer in the Law Enforcement Operations Directorate (LEOD), Unmanned Technology Operations Center (UTOC). The incumbent(s) will work alongside and support the CBP’ Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (SUAS) (aka Drone) and/or Counter Unmanned Aircraft System Programs. The employee will support the evaluation of new concepts and newly developed advanced technologies, and the development of innovative methods of introducing state of the art technology into the inspection and investigative programs, in addition to acting as a liaison between the USBP users and vendors and manufactures, ensuring that systems delivered and installed meet the technical and logistic support specifications, satisfy user requirements, and meet the cost and schedule established in the program plan. Using professional knowledge of multiple engineering and scientific disciplines (for example Civil, Electronics, Electrical, Physics, Environmental, etc.), the incumbent coordinates the evaluation, review, and analysis of high technology projects related to the enforcement mission of DHS and USBP, with special emphasis on detection and identification technology, as well as the unique requirements of DHS and USBP operations.

Typical work assignments include: Serve as deployment engineer supporting small, unmanned aircraft systems (SUAS) and/or counter unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS) teams. Support daily integration of activities related to SUAS/CUAS Operations, Intelligence, Logistics, Policy, Training, and Procurement functions. Ensuring the safety of Border Patrol Agents and their law enforcement partners by facilitating concise and timely communication and information dissemination.The intern will coordinate, analyze, research, and assist in providing technical support for the continued development, acquisition logistics, and fielding of high-tech large inspection, surveillance and investigative systems and equipment, during the research, development, test and evaluation (RDT and E), Acquisition or Support phase. Assists with preparing Program Plans, Test and Evaluation Plans, Logistics Support Plans, acceptance Test Plans, and Final Technical Reports. Drafts time frames and phases of implementation and execution of testing for Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) or supervisor review and acceptance. Attends interagency work groups on large, unique, and advanced technology inspection, surveillance, and investigative equipment matters. Assists the project leader or SME on a large, multi-year projects (such as the multi-year, multi-million-dollar surveillance, mobile, or aerostat program) or other specialized and unique technical project. This includes attending meetings, inter with industry 2 program managers monitoring the contractor's performance and schedule preparing Acceptance Test Plans, coordinating on-site acceptance testing, providing for the satisfactory and timely delivery of the system to the field, ensuring appropriate training for operators and maintenance personnel, and initial maintenance of the systems. The incumbent works on the entire range of complex of actions involved in developing, testing, procuring, fielding, supporting, and maintaining new surveillance, detection technology, aircraft, and other equipment systems designed to affect the ability of USBP to accomplish its mission efficiently and effectively. At the direction of a SME or supervisor, this may include developing and obtaining user and upper-level management acceptance of the development and acquisition strategy, preparing the technical and logistics support specification requirements and other support specification requirements, as well as documents required for solicitation packages evaluating technical proposals, preparing reports, assisting in negotiations, and monitoring the contractor’s performance. The employee will also perform analytical and evaluative work related to the development of schedules, preparation of project plans budgets, and other execution phase documentation and activities for assigned projects. Plans, coordinates, and evaluates logistical actions required to support a specified project by assisting in identifying specific requirements for funding, manpower, material, facilities, and services.
