The objective of this program is to ensure participants are trained and equipped with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform HVAC/R installation and service operations across industrial, commercial, and residential applications. Participants will learn refrigeration cycle theory, system diagnostics, preventative maintenance, installation and startup procedures, troubleshooting methodologies, safety and code compliance standards, blueprint and schematic interpretation, customer service best practices, field documentation, tool and equipment usage, and operational workflows. The intern is expected to earn EPA Section 608 certification and will gain exposure to sheet metal fabrication, brazing and welding, electrical and plumbing support work, DDC controls, and geothermal systems while developing the technical and professional competencies necessary for long-term careers in the mechanical trades industry.
As an HVAC/R Installation & Service Technician intern, participants will support industrial, commercial, and residential mechanical contracting operations at Rich's Refrigeration, Heating, A/C, Plumbing & Welding Service, Inc. in Sutton, WV. Interns will gain hands-on experience installing, servicing, diagnosing, and maintaining HVAC and refrigeration systems, and will be cross-trained across the company's self-performed trades, including electrical, plumbing, sheet metal fabrication, welding, DDC controls, and geothermal. The program is structured to begin with an installation and service immersion so the company can establish the intern's baseline skill level, followed by an individualized combination of manufacturer training, third-party certification, and in-house mentorship.
