Job description:
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic intern will train under the supervision of certified service technicians to diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy construction and industrial equipment, including excavators, motor graders, wheel loaders, cranes, and related machinery. The intern will gain exposure to Kirby-Smith's shop operations, safety standards, and customer service approach while developing the technical competencies needed for a career as a Shop or Field Service Technician. Key Responsibilities: Perform diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and repair on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and powertrains under technician supervision. Complete preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled service work on heavy equipment. Read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer service bulletins● Utilize diagnostic software and specialized tools to identify equipment issues● Document all work performed, parts used, and labor hours in the shop management system● Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with OSHA and Kirby-Smith safety standards● Communicate professionally with technicians, service managers, and customers regarding equipment status and repairs● Participate in on-the-job training sessions and shadow experienced technicians across equipment specialties.Qualifications● Active-duty service member approved for participation in the DoD SkillBridge Program with 180 days or fewer remaining prior to separation● Military experience in a mechanical, technical, or maintenance-related field preferred (e.g., wheeled/tracked vehicle mechanic, power generation equipment repair, or similar MOS/rating). Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.Ability to read technical manuals and follow detailed repair procedures. Willingness to learn manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools and software. Valid driver's license; CDL a plus but not required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks in a shop environment, including bending, kneeling, and working in confined spaces. Strong work ethic, safety mindset, and professional communication skills. Physical Requirements & Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in a shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and varying temperatures. May require occasional field service travel to customer job sites. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required and provided.
