Summary description:
The Corrections Officer reports directly to the Jail Sergeant or Shift Sergeant on duty. The position is responsible for ensuring that all policies and procedures of inmate detention are adhered to. The position is responsible for all needs of inmates. This position is also directly responsible for the safety of the inmates that are under the position's control. This position is also generally responsible for the safety and security of all inmates and co-workers at this facility
Job description:
Essential Functions 1. Responsible for monitoring and supervising all inmates 2. Waits for doors to open and close, and then escorts inmates to appropriate destinations 3. Prepares inmates to meet with the Justice of the Peace 4. Is in constant communication with the Control Room to account for the correct inmates 5. Documents medical, housing changes, toiletry, disciplinary, property, accident, inmate records, recreation, and telephone log reports 6. Is responsible for first line intervention of assaults, fights, suicide attempts, and escape attempts 7. Is responsible for maintaining the proper time allowance with regards to visitors, parole/probation officers, attorneys, and recreational facilities 8. Directly supervises routine activities (feeding, visitation, sick call, housing sanitation, and cleaning) while ensuring that inmate rights are protected as well as jail policies and procedures are followed Non-Essential Functions 1. Operates jail office computers for researching inmate files and records when necessary 2. Performs other duties within professional capabilities Job Requirements Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Must know the Texas Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedures, and the Texas Commission on Jail Standards 2. Must know the Taylor County Jail Rules and Regulations 3. Good oral and written communication skills 4. Good supervisory, and leadership skills 5. Must be able to motivate inmates 6. Must be able to cooperate and work well with others 7. Must be able to delegate 8. Ability to listen, respond, and communicate with disruptive and/or problem inmates 9. Must be able to make prompt decisions Physical Demands 1. Must be able to control inmates through physical and agile strength ifnecessary 2. Must be able through physical or agile strength to protect self, co-workers, or other inmates 3. Must be able to physically tolerate OC Spray 4. Work involves writing, standing, walking, sitting, talking, listening, lifting, and reaching with hands and arms 5. Successful performance requires visual and hearing acuity sufficient enough tooperate departmental equipment and the ability to proof-read documents and reports 6. Must be able to physically run due to the possibility of the following if applicable: apprehension of an inmate; safety & security of inmates, co­ workers, the public, or self demands it Minimum Qualifications 1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED) 2. One year experience 3. Must have jailer's license 4. Must know how to use radio communications equipment Special Requirements 1. Must be able to be bonded Current Equipment (list not exhaustive) 1. Office, computer, and telephone equipment 2. Air packs 3. Fire suppression and safety equipment including hoses 4. Radio equipment
