This internship will focus on learning all the requirements expected of a VSO Representative. The intern will assist the Veteran Services Office on a variety of representative tasks.
Job description:
Veterans Services Intern, purpose, and responsibilitiesDepending on the area of assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:• Functions as a systems navigator, providing outreach and linkage to supportive services to at-risk and impacted veterans and their families.• Assists with screening veterans to determine proper avenues for wellbeing in supportive services areas such as: health care, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, legal services, employment, and housing.• Helps coordinate direct referrals to appropriate community and government agencies.• Acts as an access agent, providing direction to resources for recovery and assistance programs. Aids Veterans and/or their family members with setting goals.• Participates in veteran engagement events and community outreach in San Mateo County.• Assists in the development and evaluation of veteran and military family focused programs.• Maintains a referral checklist of services provided while engaging in consistent follow up.• Participates in continuing education and trainings, staying informed of all relevant resources and programs available within the community, cities, County, state, and Federal government.Additionally, the role will include supporting the VSO Front Desk by:• Assisting County Visitors and callers in helping determine the nature of the visit or the problem and explain detailed policies, procedures and regulations related to veterans’ services.• Performing a variety of basic office support duties such as collating materials, distributing incoming mail, preparing materials for mailing, completing forms, proofreading typed or printed materials, and/or typing correspondence reports and other materials.• Inputting Client information into various databases • Conducting out-reach and follow up callsImmediate Goals• Receive training on Drupal 9 (website) and begin maintaining website• Receive VetPRO training• Receive Front Desk Training • Become familiar with the Veterans Programs provided by the VSO so that you can speak to them with some degree of authority• Become familiar with the tools available for the position (Social Media, Handouts, Outreach Materials)• Become familiar with the VSO Calendar and Scheduling system Work ScheduleA typical schedule for a VSO intern will be Monday through Thursday from 0800 to 1600. You may be assigned to assist other areas within the agency which could affect these hours.
