Job description:
This internship is ideal for individuals who are passionate about working with animals and making a difference in the lives of young people. In this role, you’ll support the Equine Specialist and clinical teams in preparing horses and facilities for therapy sessions, assisting during sessions as needed, and ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of our therapy herd. Your work will involve daily hands-on tasks such as feeding, grooming, leading horses, mucking stalls, maintaining clean and safe facilities, and monitoring the physical and emotional health of the horses. You’ll also gain valuable insight into how equine-assisted psychotherapy supports youth healing from trauma, behavioral health challenges, and emotional dysregulation. While this is not a clinical or riding-focused position, it provides meaningful exposure to the therapeutic process and a behind-the-scenes view of how structured, intentional animal interaction can promote resilience and growth in young people.Interns must be comfortable working around large animals, possess a strong sense of responsibility, and demonstrate maturity, teamwork, and attention to detail. Prior horse experience is helpful but not required—what matters most is a willingness to learn and a heart for service. This 90–180 day internship offers a deeply rewarding experience that combines animal care, youth development, and mental health support in a unique and natural setting. As part of the Idaho Youth Ranch mission, you’ll contribute to a powerful healing environment that transforms lives—both human and equine.
