University of Maryland College Park - University Attending Veterinarian

University of Maryland College Park
College Park, MD
Summary description:
The University Attending Veterinarian (UAV) provides regulatory oversight of research, testing and teaching with animals at UMD, and serves as Director of the Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR), which provides animal husbandry, facility management, and veterinary care for all animals in the University of Maryland (UMD) animal program at College Park.
Job description:
The UMD animal program includes the activities of investigators and teachers from five colleges in 12 on-campus buildings, as well as activities at the Campus Farm, the UMD Dairy and Equine facilities in Clarksville, the Angus beef and toxicology facilities in Queenstown, and the Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research in Rockville, MD. The role of the UAV, which is mandated by federal statutes and regulation, is to ensure the health and welfare of all animals in the program, directly, through the provision of veterinary care, and/or indirectly through the oversight and guidance of other veterinary and technical staff. An effective UAV is central to achieving the highest quality animal care, as well as ground-breaking and internationally-recognized scientific research. Due to the specific mandates of the federal regulations, this role is unique at each entity (i.e., in this case, UMD) that has a PHS-assured and USDA-registered animal care and use program. In addition to the UAV’s authority and responsibility for the health and welfare of all animals in the program, the UAV must be an appointed member of and work closely and collaboratively with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and report regularly to the Institutional Official (IO). Over the next year, the UAV will be the primary point person in the ongoing effort to centralize the management of all UMD animal facilities, will guide the setting of campus per diem rates, and will continue the modernization of UMD facilities, processes, and skillsets, in support of the highest-quality research and teaching programs in the country.
