Summary description:
Program prepares participants for entry-level emergency management positions and civilian career pathways through experience in port emergency preparedness, response planning, and infrastructure resilience initiatives. Participants will work alongside experienced professionals in both real-world operations and structured training exercises, developing skills applicable to civilian emergency management roles. Participants will complete FEMA-certified training (ICS, NIMS, HSEEP) to satisfy future professional certification course requirements such as the National Emergency Management Basic Academy.
Job description:
Supports emergency preparedness, response planning, and infrastructure resilience initiatives; develops and updates emergency plans, support exercises and drills, coordinates with public safety and maritime partners; and applies federal, state, and local emergency management frameworks in a port environment.

Minimum Requirements: (1) Served at least 180 days on active duty in any of the U.S. Armed Forces; (2) Must be on track to receive an Honorable Discharge - has completed the required service TAPS/TGPS courses; (3) Must receive command (first O-5/Field Grade commander or higher in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DOW SkillBridge Program prior to start of program; (4) Must be in local commuting distance of the Port of Tacoma throughout the entirety of the program. Preferred Selection Factors: (1) Available to for the full 180-day opportunity; (2) Separation date of June 2027 or later. Applications currently being accepted until September 15, 2026 for an earliest anticipated start date of January 2027.
