The Patrol Division, under the command of Captain Robert S. Singleton, III, is the largest division within the police department and is responsible for providing 24-hour law enforcement services and specialized enforcement to the community. Uniformed police officers answer nearly 250 calls for service daily and strive to provide the highest quality law enforcement service in the most effective and efficient manner possible. The Investigations Division, under the command of Captain Angela W. Rabon, serves as the investigative branch of the Sumter Police Department. The division's mission and primary responsibility is to thoroughly investigate felony and serious misdemeanor crimes occurring within the City of Sumter and to identify, arrest, and successfully aid in the prosecution of offenders. The Investigative Services Division is represented by a group of highly trained and dedicated detectives. The detectives work cooperatively with other divisions within the Sumter Police Department, as well as with other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The desire of all detectives and officers in the Investigative Services Division is to reduce the rate of crime by arresting those responsible for committing crimes in our community and to provide support to all victims of crime. The Organized Crime and Vice Control (OCVC) Unit is comprised of highly skilled and trained officers who investigate drug trafficking and vice crimes. OCVC conducts covert operations utilizing undercover officers, informants, and information from the public to apprehend and bring to justice those who solicit and offer for sale drugs, gambling, and prostitution. The Communications Division is the "nerve center" for Emergency Services in the City and County of Sumter. The Center is responsible for the receiving of 911 and non-emergency calls for service, as well as dispatching appropriate resources and personnel to answer received calls. As needs arise, Dispatchers communicate and coordinate with surrounding counties and may also answer after hours calls for departments such as Water and Sewer.
