The university wants to take the lead in workforce development for the Huntsville/southern middle Tennessee region and plans on achieving this by increasing its research presence in the area with local industries and federal agencies.The technical specialist role is an entry level position critical for the university’s research. This position will work with the UTSI faculty, staff, and students to design and fabricate experimental setups by serving as a technical consultant, design reviewer and mentor in materials selection, as well as maintain current research equipment.
Job description:
The technical specialist will be responsible for supporting the research and/or machine shop operations on site at the UTSI campus, located in Tullahoma, TN. This position will provide general knowledge of the operations, machining, facilities, laboratories, and support equipment on campus with an opportunity to focus on one support area if desired. The technical specialist will work with the UT team to manage and prioritize the support of the advanced aerospace research laboratories and facilities, in the form of maintenance, fabrication, design, and the safe operation of research apparatuses. Primary Responsibilities:• Fabricates, installs, operates, maintains, inspects, and repairs specialized equipment per regulations, codes, and professional practices.• Troubleshoots and diagnoses a broad range of scientific instrumentation and equipment.• Fabricates and assembles components as specified.• Selects materials and components needed for completion of designs, fabrications, and repairs.• Reads, interprets, and uses blueprints and schematics, instructions, manuals, or shop drawings to understand specifications of work.• Performs maintenance and repair on malfunctioning equipment to include modification, replacement of parts, adjustment, and calibration.
This position is an entry-level technical specialist role that is supporting the research and/or machine shop operations on site at the UTSI campus.The university plans on expanding its research capabilities and collaboration with local industries/federal agencies over the next few years. We expect there to be a growth in the aerospace and defense research and industry sector in this area and want the university to be a leading contributor in the workforce development and research.
