The Patrol Deputy is the front-line representative of the Sheriff’s Office to the general public. They are responsible for responding to calls for service within the county, acting as a criminal activity deterrent by patrolling assigned areas, and enforcing the laws of Taylor County, the state of Texas, and the United States. At times they may be called upon to carry out initial or basic duties of other divisions. Members of other divisions may call upon them to perform preliminary investigations and submit findings for follow-up investigations. In addition to other government, law enforcement and public safety agencies, the Patrol Deputy interacts with all segments of the county population including the mentally ill, individuals with emergencies, and those with problems of a non-emergency nature. The Patrol Deputy deals with individuals who are victims and perpetrators of all types of crimes. They may also be called upon regularly to provide impartial advice or peaceful resolutions to situations, which often are civil in nature. Subject to call-out 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Essential Job Functions:1. Respond to reports of crimes in progress and effecting arrests as necessary.2. Conduct preliminary investigation of crimes.3. Execution of felony to misdemeanor on-site and warrant arrests.4. Assisting other law enforcement agencies as needed.5. Reports directly to the shift sergeant. May be required to act as shift supervisor in the absence of the sergeant.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters.- Knowledge of Texas statutes and code as it relates to patrol operations.- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, law enforcement officers from other jurisdictions and other county employees and officials.- Knowledge of investigatory techniques.- Skill with firearms, and other law enforcement equipment.- Ability to operate a patrol vehicle safely and correctly.- Knowledge of all departmental policies and procedures.Working Conditions: Work location is primarily outside and in patrol car. Secondary location is office environment. May be subjected to physically and mentally stressful situations. May be exposed to hazards which might result in serious injury or death.Physical Demands: Bending, squatting, kneeling, running, twisting upper body and lifting. Frequent sitting, standing and walking. Physical ability and strength associated with forceful physical contact.Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.Minimum Years of Experience: None.Minimum Experience/Training: All phases of criminal and civil law enforcement, methods of investigation and patrol. State statutory requirements for peace officers.Special Requirements: Valid Texas Drivers’ License, Permanent Texas Peace Officer’s License, and TCOLE Basic Peace Officer’s Proficiency Certification. Successful completion of Field Training and Evaluation Program.
