EMT Training and fire department internship

• Fire Service History & Culture: Introduction to department organization, chain of command, ethics, and professional conduct.• Physical Fitness & Wellness: Intensive physical training, including cardiovascular conditioning (running, swimming) and strength training (CrossFit or similar functional fitness), often focusing on the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) requirements.• Firefighter Safety & Health: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) use, maintenance, and survival training.• Fire Behavior & Building Construction: Understanding the science of fire, fire growth, and how different building types react to fire.• Tools & Equipment: Identification, inspection, and basic operation of common fire apparatus tools.EMTA significant portion of the academy is dedicated to earning EMT certification, as most firefighters are also first responders for medical emergencies. This typically includes classroom and clinical hours.• Patient Assessment: Scene size-up, primary and secondary assessments.• Basic Life Support (BLS): CPR, airway management, and bleeding control.• Medical & Trauma Emergencies: Recognizing and managing common medical conditions (e.g., cardiac emergencies, diabetes) and traumatic injuries (e.g., fractures, shock).• Special Populations: Dealing with pediatric and geriatric patients.• EMT Practical Skills & Testing: Hands-on practice and rigorous testing to achieve state and/or national EMT certification.The final weeks focus on advanced fireground skills, team operations, and emergency specializations. This phase heavily utilizes training props, burn buildings, and realistic scenario training.• Water Supply & Hose Evolutions: Connecting to hydrants, laying, charging, advancing, and operating various hose lines.• Ladders: Proper placement, raising, climbing, and working from ground and aerial ladders.• Ventilation & Forcible Entry: Creating openings to relieve heat/smoke (ventilation) and gaining access to locked structures (forcible entry).• Search & Rescue (S&R): Techniques for searching fire-involved buildings and removing victims.• Hazardous Materials (HazMat): Awareness and Operations levels training (NFPA 472/470 standards).• Incident Command System (ICS): Training on organizing and managing emergency operations.
