What is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?The primary focus of an EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation, and functions as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. An EMT performs interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance and is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.About the Program:The Academy is a rigorous 8–12-week program which qualifies the employee to take the New York State Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician exam. There is no cost for the class, and all books, tuition, fees and uniforms will be paid by AMR Buffalo. Upon successful completion of the class, all tests and state certification, the employee will be supported in their application for an EMT position at AMR.The right candidates must:Be at least 18 years oldHave proof of a HS diploma or GEDValid Driver’s LicenseHave all required immunizationsSuccessfully complete the pre-employment screening which includes motor vehicle and criminal background checks, drug testing and a physical agility testBe and Active-Duty Service Member within 180 days of EAS with command approval.What happens after passing the course?After successful completion of the course, the employee will be eligible to take a written and skills test offered by the NYS Department of Health (NYS EMT-B).Upon receipt of the state EMT-B certification, employees will eligible to apply for a position with GMR.
