Job description:
Participants in this SkillBridge program will train as entry-level K-9 handlers and canine support personnel, gaining hands-on experience in the care, training, and operational use of working dogs. Under the supervision of experienced trainers, participants will assist in daily kennel operations and actively participate in structured training scenarios.Primary duties include assisting with canine obedience training, detection training (narcotics and/or explosives), and patrol functions such as controlled apprehension, area searches, and handler protection exercises. Participants will learn proper leash handling, reward-based training techniques, scent detection fundamentals, and canine behavior management.Participants will also develop an understanding of working dog drives and characteristics, including prey drive, hunt drive, defense drive, and environmental stability. Emphasis will be placed on evaluating canine behavior, identifying strengths and limitations, and applying appropriate training methods based on each dog’s individual traits.Additional responsibilities include maintaining kennel cleanliness, ensuring proper feeding and care of assigned canines, documenting training progress, and supporting training logistics. Participants may also observe or assist in scenario-based exercises that simulate real-world law enforcement and security operations.Throughout the program, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of working dog training as a whole, including foundational training theory, practical application, safety procedures, and operational readiness. This training is designed to prepare individuals for future employment in law enforcement, private security, or professional K-9 handling roles.
Training is conducted at our on-site facility located in Nortport, AL. The working dog environment will be both indoor and outdoor, hands-on, involving kennel management and field training. On-site housing is available. This position requires physical activity and the ability to work in varying weather conditions. Training schedules may include mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends.
