The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is an educational agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia offering programs and resources about early American history through its museums – Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown.The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation's maritime program offers SkillBridge apprentices the opportunity to develop entry level boat maintenance skills that will prepare them for meaningful employment in the maritime industry with a unique focus on sailing, wooden, and tall ships. Formal instruction and supervised OJT are provided that equips the SkillBridge apprentice with basic knowledge of shop and ship safety, operations, and the fundamentals of boat maintenance, repair and operation. The level of projects will progress weekly and include formal training in the operation of hand and power tools, as well as large shop equipment.
Job description:
We seek to attract those who are considering a career in maritime and want to learn or expand their knowledge of the trades. We offer apprenticeships of up to six months that provide the transitioning servicemember with a combination of on-the-job training, under the supervision of experienced Shipwrights, Mates, and Captains and potential for classroom learning as well. All activities are offered at Jamestown Settlement Museum during working hours, which are Monday through Friday, from 0730 – 1630 (Occasional weekends may be required, however member will be given a day off during the week). The potential for travel around the Chesapeake Bay by ship during sailing voyages also exists.Education in trade skills, maritime operations, and history through On-the-Job Training. Team member will gain experience in all aspects of traditional sailing ship maintenance and operations. Woodwork/Carpentry - Basic and Advanced Skills, Staining/Oiling/Painting/Finishing; Ships Rigging – maintaining, rigging and repair; Mechanical – diesel engine repair, maintenance and operation; Electrical – 12V and 24V systems, marine navigation systems; Leadership – potential to lead groups of volunteers during maintenance and sailing voyages.
We are a small state agency that operates two living history museums in Virginia's historic triangle. We do offer a diverse number of career paths, although we may not always have a large number open at any given time. Eligibility factors:
All Services
Experience, either through military or civilian work and/or recreation, in sailing modern or historical vessels/tall ships to include but not limited to: racing, cruising, monohull, multihulls or specialized boats.Education, experience or knowledge of History, Public History, Education and or teaching methodology could be helpful in this role.
