Summary description:
This position aims to provide the intern with a broad exposure to the Mississippi State University Coastal and Marine Extension efforts with a particular emphasis within the Coastal Conservation and Restoration Program (CCR) and Mississippi Sound Estuary Program (MSEP). The intern will have opportunities to participate in both field- and desktop-based work to monitor natural ecosystems and develop science-based management strategies. Associated with the developed strategies, will be guidance for policy and environment compliance reviews and additional communication strategies for coastal end-users. The intern will be introduced to and work with a network of coastal natural resource management, science communication, and research professionals in the area. This will allow the intern to explore and be evaluated for job opportunities upon completion of the internship.
Job description:
The Director of Coastal and Marine Extension (Eric Sparks) will establish a synergistic interaction between the Coastal Conservation and Restoration Program, Mississippi Sound Estuary Program, partner entities, and intern. The intern will join a highly motivated team of Extension and research professionals in the Coastal Conservation and Restoration Program (ccrlab.org) and Mississippi Sound Estuary Program (mssoundep.com). During the internship, the Director will identify priorities for growth, outline technical strategies, oversee immersion to the highly motivated staff of these programs, and facilitate networking opportunities for the intern. Both of these programs are responsible for conducting research and educational needs assessments for coastal communities related to improve natural resource management and community resilience. After needs are identified, staff from these programs conduct or facilitate activities such as: field- and lab-based research, trainings for the existing and future coastal workforce, conducting policy reviews of coastal habitat management practices, and producing publications.
This opportunity is for an in-person position with the Mississippi State University Coastal Conservation and Restoration Program based at the Mississippi State University Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi, MS. The closest military installations are Keesler Air Force Base and Naval Construction Battalion Center Gulfport, both approximately 15-minute drives. Intern must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an environmental science focused field. Preference will be given to advanced degrees and backgrounds that align with one of the CCR focus areas. Intern must be able to pass a background check.
