Bowhead is seeking transitioning Service Members for a SkillBridge Machinist Internship supporting the Army Research Laboratory (ARL). This opportunity allows you to apply and expand your machining, fabrication, and CNC skills while supporting advanced research and development projects for the U.S. Army.

What You’ll Do (Training Overview)

As a SkillBridge Machinist intern, you will train alongside experienced machinists and engineers to:

• Fabricate and modify precision, one-of-a-kind components supporting ARL research programs.

• Learn to interpret technical sketches, drawings, and guidelines to generate machine codes for CNC mills and lathes.

• Develop proficiency in adapting procedures, equipment, and tools to meet unique technical requirements.

• Assist in designing new methods, adapting existing equipment, and solving complex machining challenges.

• Apply scientific and engineering principles to machining tasks, including troubleshooting, laboratory processes, and data interpretation.

• Train on Government-provided machining equipment, including manual mills, lathes, CNC machines, drill presses, saws, grinders, brakes, punches, and more.

• Participate in project planning discussions to define scope, objectives, timelines, and equipment needs.

• Work semi-independently with limited supervision while maintaining technical accuracy and documentation.

• Support other duties as aligned with machining, prototyping, and engineering support.

Required Background (Ideal Candidate Profile)

Service Members with experience or interest in machining, fabrication, engineering technology, or maintenance fields are encouraged to apply.

Preferred experience includes:

• Ability to generate CNC machine codes based on sketches/drawings.

• Proficiency in manual machining for prototype work.

• Familiarity with CNC mills and lathes, G-Code, and precision machining tolerances (as tight as ± .0001”).

• Experience with MasterCAM/SolidCAM or similar programming software.

• Capable of basic welding (TIG, stick, oxyacetylene).

• Strong shop math skills.

• Ability to interpret verbal and written technical instructions.

• Experience with HAAS milling and lathe machines is highly preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs repeatedly.

• Ability to stand/walk for extended periods.

• Ability to bend, twist, squat, and perform shop-related physical tasks.

Security Clearance

• Must have an active Secret security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).
